Antique Dutch Blue & White Royal Delft Commemorative Plate Ontzet Groningen 1672 - 1922. SOLD


The tin glazed earthenware plate decorated in shades of blue with the Martini church tower of the city Groningen. Surrounded with the text from Vondel:

O GRONINGE, UIT PUIN & ASCH & STOF VERREZEN
VERGEET DE WELDAET NIET, DIE GODT U HEEFT BEWEZEN. - Vondel

(O Groningen, risen from rubble, ashes and dust Don’t forget the blessing, which God has proved to you.)
Commemorating 250 years ago the ending of the siege of the city in 1672 by the German bishop of Münster Bernhard von Galen after a month. His nickname was Bommen Berend for the use of many canons to shoot  / bomb on the city. The rim with leaves.
Signed on the back in underglaze blue for:
